Mail

Mail reads and sends against mail accounts you configure. Kancil is not a mail provider — it is a client that keeps your correspondence next to the records it is about.

Set an account up in Email settings. Until you do, the page says so and does nothing else.

The layout

Folders down the left, messages in the middle, the message you selected on the right. Above the folders sit Smart folders, which are saved queries rather than real IMAP folders.

Search and its scope

The search box has an explicit scope:

• This folder — the folder you are in.
• All mail — full-text across every folder and every account, message bodies included.

Scope is a control rather than a guess because the two behave very differently: folder search is fast, all-mail search is thorough. A further toggle narrows to messages with attachments.

Smart folders

A smart folder is a named query that appears alongside real folders. Define it by matching on:

• From, an address or a whole domain;
• Subject contains;
• Mailing list, matching the List-Id header — the reliable way to catch a list, since its posts come from many senders.

Conditions group, and each group is all (AND) or any (OR), with the groups themselves combined the same way. That is enough to express "from this domain, unless it is the newsletter" without a query language.

A smart folder can span all accounts or be pinned to one.

Filter rules

Rules are smart folders that act: matching messages get moved to a folder, which is created if it does not exist. That is how quarantining works — the noise lands somewhere other than your inbox, and the dashboard shows what was caught, bucketed, so you can still see what you would have missed.

Re-apply runs the rules over an existing folder, which is what you want after writing a rule for mail that has already arrived.

Sending

Composing needs sending configured, separately from reading — an account can be read-only. If it is not set up, the compose button says so rather than failing after you have written the message.

Mail and the rest of Kancil

Messages are included in global Search, carrying their folder and account. Email addresses also appear as nodes in the knowledge graph, derived from address matching — which is how a contact and a company turn out to be connected through a correspondent nobody linked by hand.

From a message you can create records — a task, a contact, a rule — so the thing that arrived by mail becomes the thing you act on.
