Locations

Four read-only lists shared by everyone on the instance. Where the data comes from and why it is shared is covered in Reference data.

Countries

The country list, addressed by two-letter code. A country's page is the entry point to its regions and its larger cities.

Regions

First-level subdivisions — GeoNames' admin1. What that means depends on the country: a province in the Netherlands, a state in Germany, a région in France. Filter by country to get a usable list.

Cities

The big one, and the only list with filters worth explaining:

• Search on name;
• Country and region;
• Minimum population.

Population is the filter that makes this list usable. GeoNames includes every named settlement, so an unfiltered search for a common name returns dozens of hamlets. Set a floor and the place you meant appears.

A city's page shows its identifiers and where it sits in the country and region hierarchy.

Languages

A flat list, for recording a language consistently rather than typing it.

Changing the data

You cannot edit these lists from here — they are imported. Refreshing an import is an admin operation, audited, and covered by the admin endpoints. If a place is missing, the answer is a re-import rather than a manual addition, so the tables stay a faithful copy of their source.
